In 2017, the change in the curricular bases for third and fourth media in our country was approved. This year, it was the final approval by the National Education Council (CNED). This change of curriculum will occur progressively beginning the year 2020 with the third media and the year 2021 with the fourth rooms in all educational establishments in Chile.

This modification focuses on the relevant knowledge to develop in the current world, looking for the meeting points between the training needs required for the development of the person, for the citizenship, for the labor insertion and for the attainment of higher studies.

This modernization of the structure of study for the students of 3rd and 4th media, seeks to reorganize school time, favoring greater electivity. This change seeks a greater commitment and involvement of young people in their own training process, which is why they are given tools so that they can choose subjects according to their interests and move better towards higher education.

Broadly speaking, students will have fewer total subjects and a greater number of hours in each of the subjects of the differentiated training plan, which aims to promote the deepening of concepts and the best development of skills to live, think and work, such as citizenship, responsibility, collaboration, critical thinking and communication, among others.

The key elements to understand this change are:

  • Formation of integral citizens: Through their learning process, students can extend and deepen their general formation and thus develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that allow them to respond to the needs of today’s society. It seeks to train citizens with critical judgment, to communicate effectively and effectively, adaptable, participatory in democratic institutions, respectful of diversity and multiculturalism, empowered by themselves and with a good level of self-esteem.

  • Greater electivity: It seeks to promote spaces of freedom and active participation to students that allow them to exercise responsible decision making, promoting autonomy, critical judgment, commitment, flexibility, creativity and participation.

  • Better transition to Higher Education: The updating of the curriculum to focus on the relevant knowledge to develop in the current world and promote a space for differentiated training, which allows deepening in those areas of personal interest, enable them for future studies and the East Your work future.

  • Greater equity: Offer spaces that provide equal opportunities for deepening, flexibility and electivity to students of all differentiations (Humanist-Scientific, Professional Technician, and Artistic) in order to enhance their own interests. From this principle, a Common General Training Plan shared by the three differentiations (Humanistic-Scientific, Technical-Professional and Artistic) and a Common Elective General Training Plan are offered, within which students can take subjects that the establishment You want to strengthen according to your needs and educational project. In addition, each differentiation has its own plan in which students can opt for specializations (in the case of Technical-Professional and Artistic) or deepening subjects (in the case of Humanistic-Scientific) depending on their particular interests.

The educational paradigm is in constant transformation and Chilean education must adapt to these changes and to the needs of the students within the classroom, that is why it is expected to address these needs with the new curricular bases, which will begin to be implemented Starting next year.
